A Project Based Upon an Impulse Purchase
Why Study Macs? I would love to say that the inspiration for this project came from an open-mindedness to venture outside of the Windows box and see what another sector of the computing world has to offer. I would love to to say that I was swayed by Apple's spiffy "Switcher" campaign and a certain desire for a computer that doesn't require all of my patience to operate. I would love to say that I was in need of a new computer and I made the tough choice to switch. However, to say any of the above things would be a lie. I switched on a whim. The full explanation of why I went on this whim requires an excessive amount of insight into my own life and the nuances of human relationships...so to simplify things I'll just say that I was talked into buying a Mac by a fried of mine who also wanted to make the Switch. So after walking into the Apple store with the intention of only "looking" or "testing things out," we each ended up leaving with a MacBook (and a free Ipod from the promotion Apple was running out of the time). After the initial shock wore off and realization kicked in, I figured I better know how to use this new machine I had purchased. Enter: CS-225 and this project. So thanks to the cooperation of the other half of this project, Francis, I hope that this project not only serves as a learning opportunity for you, dear reader, but also for myself. I come into this project with almost no prior knowledge or experience in dealing with Macs: the "other OS" that only weird art nerds and slick Hollywood coffee-shop types used. Purpose: I hope, dear reader, that by the end of this project and your tour of this web site you can gain an insight into what is inolved in making the switch from a PC to a Mac. Not only on a practical level, but also on a deeper, Computer-Science-Major-type level with regards to programming, architecture, and other such ilk. I will present a conclusion at the end of my findings as to what works for me, but this project in no way will attempt to settle the "OS Wars." Rather we hope to give you a good insight into the inner, outer, and in-between workings of this peculiar little computer. Ta ta for now, |
